Penelope Cruz Sanchez
Penelope Cruz Sanchez is the daughter of
Eduardo Cruz, a Madrid hairdresser, as well as Encarna Sanchez. She was a
fervent performer in her youth and would reenact TV commercials to amuse the
family. But she chose to concentrate her energy on dance. She continued her
training by working with several well-known dancers, after having spent 9 years
studying classical ballet at Spain's National Conservatory. She found her
calling at the age of 15 after she defeated over 300 girls at an audition for
an agency that represented talent. The contract she signed secured her roles on
Spanish TV programs as well as music videos. It opened the doors to a promising
career on the big screen. Cruz made her film debut in The Greek Labyrinth
(1993) (The Greek Labyrinth), then appeared briefly in the Timothy Dalton
thriller Framed (1992). Her final film was an Oscar-winning film, Belle Epoque
(1992), where she played one of four sisters who compete to win the heart of a
handsome army deserter. It also received several Goyas in Spain, which is the
Spanish equivalent to the Academy Awards. Her resume grew by about three or
four films every year, and before long Cruz was a leading lady in Spanish
cinema. Live Flesh (1997) (Live Flesh) offered her the chance to work with
renowned Spanish director Pedro Almodovar (who would later be her ticket to
international fame), and the same year she was the lead actress in the
thriller/drama/mystery/sci-fi film Open Your Eyes (1997), a huge hit in Spain
that earned eight Goyas (though none for Cruz). It was a turning point for her
in 1998, when the movie-industry comedy La Nina De Tus Ojos (1998) earned her
the Best Actress Goya. After a few more attempts in English-language films her
first international hit was Almodovar’s All About My Mother (1999) where she
portrayed an unchaste, yet well-meaning nun. Cruz discovered herself very
popular on both sides of the Atlantic since her film won numerous awards and
praises. Woman on Top (2000) was her next film. It was an American comedy
featuring a chef with remarkable culinary skills and severe motion sickness.
